Career Highlights: A 12-year NFL veteran quarterback, Joe Theismann led the Washington Redskins to the 1983 Super Bowl title with a 27-17 win over the Miami Dolphins…Theismann played 163 consecutive games for the Washington Redskins from 1974 to 1985, and was named the league’s MVP in 1983…He holds Redskins records for passing yardage (25,206), completions (2,044) and attempts (3,602)...Theismann was selected the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 1982 for his community service and dedication to the health and welfare of children…He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1982 and 1983…Theismann’s career ended in November 1985 when he suffered a comminuted compound fracture of his leg while being sacked by New York Giants linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson during a Monday Night Football game…The injury was voted the NFL’s “Most Shocking Moment in History” by viewers in an ESPN poll…Prior to the NFL, he was a Canadian Football League star for the Toronto Argonauts (1971-73)…An All-American at Notre Dame, Theismann led the Fighting Irish to consecutive Cotton Bowls…He still holds the Irish school record for most passing yards in a single games with 526 against USC in a torrential downpour in 1970...Runner-up to Jim Plunkett in the Heisman Trophy balloting, Theismann was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003…Following his football career, Theismann spent two seasons as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports before moving on to ESPN…At ESPN he served as an NFL analyst and Sunday Night Football commentator for many years and also was frequently heard on ESPN Radio…In addition, he appeared in studio on Sunday NFL Countdown (1988 to 1997) and on Monday Night Countdown (1993 to 1997)…Theismann also has worked Washington Redskins pre-season games on CSN…Theismann’s first television experience came in 1976 when he served as an analyst for University of Maryland basketball telecasts…Currently, Theismann is an analyst for the NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football….He also serves as co-host of the weekly show “Playbook”…Theismann is also a majority owner of the Florida Tuskers football franchise in the United Football League.
