Career Highlights: Steve Spurrier is one of the most successful collegiate coaches of all time…He has coached a national championship team, won seven Southeastern Conference titles, and won nearly three-fourths of his college games coached…Spurrier is starting his 21st collegiate season, his seventh season as head coach at the University of South Carolina…Throughout his collegiate career he has compiled a 186-73-2 (.716) record, including a 44-33 mark at South Carolina…In 2010, Spurrier’s team had several milestones en route to a 9-5 season, including the school’s first SEC Eastern Division title and first appearance in the SEC Championship Game…The Gamecocks also defeated the nation’s No. 1 team Alabama for the first time in school history, and finished the season ranked 22nd in both major polls…Spurrier was named SEC Coach of the Year for the seventh time, his ninth overall Coach of the Year honor…Spurrier made his college head coaching debut with the Duke Blue Devils in 1987 and led them to the 1989 Atlantic Coast Championship before returning to his alma mater, the University of Florida in 1990…In 12 years at Florida, Spurrier’s teams won seven SEC championships, one national title (beat Florida State in 1996) and finished ranked in the nation’s top 10 nine times...Spurrier amassed an incredible 122-27-1 (.817) record at Florida...Prior to South Carolina, Spurrier was head coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins (2002-03) and returned to the college coaching ranks after a one-year absence on the sidelines…Not expected to have a winning season in his first year at South Carolina in 2005, Spurrier led the Gamecocks to a five-game SEC winning streak including historic wins at Tennessee and against then 12th ranked Florida…He was named SEC Coach of the Year by Associated Press…That season, he led the 7-4 Gamecocks to the Independence Bowl, where they lost to Missouri...In 2006, Spurrier led the Gamecocks to an 8-5 record and a win over Conference USA champion Houston in the Liberty Bowl….His 2007 squad got off to a quick start with wins over SEC rival #11 Georgia, as well as beating then undefeated #8 Kentucky, and climbed to #6 in the National and BCS rankings before stumbling down the stretch…With a 7-6 record in 2008, Carolina returned to a New Year’s Day bowl for the first time since the 2001 season…The Gamecocks followed that with another 7-6 record in 2009, their sixth consecutive non-losing season…Spurrier won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1966 after serving as Florida’s starting quarterback for three seasons…He was a First-Team All-American in 1965 and 1966…Spurrier was a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1967 and played 10 NFL seasons including a stint with Tampa Bay…His first head coaching position was with Tampa Bay of the USFL.
