(South Shore, Lake Tahoe, NV, May 27, 2010) – Three-time Pro Bowler and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been named the recipient of the 2010 “Brodie Award,” recognizing an individual’s accomplishments in both a chosen profession and in the sport of golf.
The award is named for former National Football League Most Valuable Player (1970) John Brodie, the one-time San Francisco 49ers quarterback and Senior PGA Tour player. It is given each year by organizers of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. Previous winners include Mario Lemieux, Rick Rhoden, John Elway and last years winner, Trent Dilfer.
In late May, Romo finished six strokes behind winner Jack Wagner at the Cox Celebrity Championship, hosted by Drew Brees. He also won a playoff in a US Open regional qualifier, advancing to the USGA sectional tournament.
Also in May, he qualified for a spot in the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Championship but declined to play because his tee time conflicted with a voluntary Cowboys off-season workout. In 2009, he won several amateur events, including the Will County Amateur and The Northern Texas PGA Pro-Scratch Championship with partner Mark Walker. The pair finished second in the 2010 tournament.
The #1-ranked player in the Golf Digest 2009 rating of athlete golfers, Romo retains his amateur status and does not accept prize money. At the American Century Championship, his second place finish in 2009 and his third place finish in 2008 resulted in the donation of over $75,000 to charities, including the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
In leading the Cowboys to the post-season, Romo finished the 2009 NFL regular season with 26 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a career high 4,483 yards. An undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois, Romo became the Dallas Cowboys starter in 2006. Since then, he has lead the team into the post season three times and has compiled a regular season record of 38-17 as a starter.
Brodie pioneered the pro athlete connection to golf and was an accomplished golfer for decades. He famously switched his focus from football to golf after retirement and qualified for the Senior PGA Tour in the mid-1980s. He found success among the best competitive players over the age of 50 and captured the title at the 1991 Senior Pacific Championship, defeating Chi Chi Rodriguez and George Archer in a playoff.
The “Brodie Award” winner is selected by a panel of American Century Championship officials and is presented at the event, scheduled this year for July 13-18. The tournament is nationally televised by NBC Sports.
