At this year’s American Century Championship, NBC Sports recognized one of America’s great former athletes – John Brodie. The new “Brodie Award” will be presented each year to an individual who has achieved notable success in more than one professional sport.

The inaugural presentation of “The Brodie” went to John Brodie himself during this year’s Tournament at Edgewood Tahoe. As a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, John is one of the great legends of the NFL. After his retirement from football, Brodie attained recognition in the world of golf and has won numerous tournaments.

Equally important to John Brodie’s athletic record is the inspiration he has provided and the respect he has earned from other professional athletes. Fellow former NFL quarterbacks John Elway, Billy Joe Tolliver and John’s son-in-law, Chris Chandler, were among other celebrity players who expressed their appreciation of Brodie.

Jon Miller, Vice President of NBC Sports, introduced “The Brodie” and after explaining the new perpetual award’s significance, turned the actual presentation duties over to Chris Chandler.
