2007 CommentarySaturday July 14, 2007 Second round wrap up After his 5 under par round of 31 on the first nine holes, six time Celebrity Golf Champion Rick Rhoden played consistent golf paring every hole on the back nine at Edgewood. Rhoden's 29 point total for the second day fell one shot shy off matching the single day point total record. Rick's two day point total sits at 51 points just 3 points ahead of former NHL Goaltender Grant Fuhr. Fuhr seemed inspired by Rhoden's great play, while first round leader Billy Joe Tolliver went the opposite way and got on the bogey train. Tolliver only managed 15 points today while playing partner Fuhr scored 23. The second best round of the day was turned in by first time participant Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo. Romo's 4 under par 68 yielded him a total of 27 points for the day, moving him into the top ten for the first time. Also making a move today was defending champion actor Jack Wagner. Wagner's 4 birdies today shot him into a tie for 6th place and within striking distance of the leaders. Tow former NFL Quarterbacks are sharing the 3rd spot with 47 points. Mark Rypien and Chris Chandler both posted under par rounds and are only a couple of birdies away from taking the lead. Who will rise to challenge Rick Rhoden? Is this another odd year victory for Rhoden's resume? Check back with Tahoecelebritygolf.com for all the final round action. Mid Day Commentary Early second round action is heating up this morning and things are really changing atop the leaderboard. In Tiger like fashion former MLB Pitcher Rick Rhoden fired a 5 under par round of 31 on his front nine consisting of 3 birdies and an eagle for 20 points, almost matching his first round point total. Hanging tough and scoring birdies is NHL Hall of Fame Goaltender Grant Fuhr. Fuhr is staying within range of Rhoden, but if Rick keeps playing the way he is only a miracle could help these players catch him. Last year’s champion actor Jack Wagner is sliding up the leader board with consistent play and great putting. He is currently tied with first round leader Billy Joe Tolliver with 31 points. Tolliver got off to a slow start today but is known more for his back nine play at Edgewood. Check back for final stats and commentary of round 2. Friday July 13, 2007 First round wrap up Former NFL Quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver sinks an eagle putt on the final hole to take the lead in the first round of this year's championship. If not for the eagle and 6 points on 18, Tolliver would be sitting around 8th place. Tolliver's 2 under par round of 70 was bettered only by NHL Hall of Fame Goaltender Grant Fuhr. The 5 time Stanley Cup Champion finished with a 3 under par round of 69 scoring 25 points and posting only 1 bogie. Fuhr has never finished better than a tie for 4th in Lake Tahoe. Only 5 rounds under par were given up today at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, and Fuhr was the only non NFL Alum in the group. Sterling Sharpe, Chris Chandler and Trent Dilfer all managed sub par rounds for their first day. Sharpe sits in a tie for 2nd with Fuhr at 25 points, Chandler and Dilfer are only a birdie away both with 23 points. Rounding out the top ten are former NFL Quarterbacks Tommy Maddox and Mark Rypien, along with past champion Rick Rhoden and Colorado Avalanche Center Joe Sakic. Not far behind are defending champion actor Jack Wagner and 4 time event champion former NHL Center Dan Quinn. It does look like Sir Charles Barkley did edge out Comedian Kevin Nealon for the most negative points which keeps Charles last place streak safe for the moment. Second round play promises to be just as exciting as the first. Morning Action Official tournament play is under way at this year's American Century Celebrity Golf Championship and birdies are the word of the day. Former NFL All-Pro Quarterback Chris Chandler, posted a 3 under par score of 33 with 3 birdies and no bogies on his first nine holes. Following close behind Chandler is six time champion former MLB Pitcher Rick Rhoden. Rhoden is stringing together pars and birdies to stay just one point behind Chadler in this modified stableford scoring system. After a year away from the Celebrity Tour Rhoden seems hungry to keep his odd year victory's streak alive at Edgewood Tahoe. NHL great Joe Sakic, is off to a great start this year scoring 14 points on his front nine posting a 36 with 2 birdies and 2 bogies. Tied with Sakic at 14 points is former Superbowl MVP Mark Rypien who may have left some points on the course by posting 3 bogies along with his 3 birdies. Unfamiliar to the golf leaderboard but not shy of greatness is Jerry Rice hanging tough in 6th place with 13 points. The usual suspects are early in their round so stay posted to Tahoecelebritygolf.com for the latest and greatest. Geoff Burke Thursday July 12, 2007 The word around the clubhouse at Edgewood Tahoe is that there might be a new sheriff in town. This sheriff comes equipped with his own ten gallon hat and blue star. All Star Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, Tony Romo, has the elite of the celebrity tour taking notice with his more than adequate golf game. Romo is a first timer to this event but seems to be right at home and well equipped to give the rest of this stellar professional field a run for their money. Romo happens to be one of 17 former and active NFL Quarterbacks in this year's championship. In addition to Romo, the return of six time Celebrity Golf Champion Rick Rhoden has everyone striving to find their A game. After a short stay on the Senior PGA Tour, Rhoden seems poised to take over where he left off as being the all time leading Celebrity Tour money winner. A couple of longshots to win this championship might come from former All Pro MLB outfielder Vince Colemen and former NFL Quarterback Mark Rypien. Coleman had played great golf all week and Rypien's stellar play help his team win the Tuesday Celebrity-Am tournament. Looks to be another exciting year for this Celebrity Golf Championship so check back with Tahoecelebritygolf.com for the latest and greatest. Geoff Burke LTVA Celebrity-Am The American Century Celebrity Golf Championship kicked off today with the 2007 LTVA Celebrity-Am tournament.
