Career Highlights: One of baseball’s most feared sluggers, Darryl Strawberry is well-known both for his play on the field as well as his behavior off it…Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Strawberry was known for his homeruns and his intimidating 6-foot-6 presence in the batter’s box…He began his career with the New York Mets in 1983, posting 26 home runs, 7 triples and 74 runs batted in, while hitting .257…Strawberry was named the 1983 National League’s Rookie of the Year…In his 17-year career, he played for four different teams New York Mets (1983-1990), Los Angeles Dodgers (1991-93), San Francisco Giants (1994) and New York Yankees (1995-1999)…Nicknamed “Straw,” he helped lead the Mets and Yankees to four World Series championships (1986, 1996, 1998, 1999)…Of the 10 postseason series Strawberry played in, he was on the winning team eight times…A popular player during his career, Strawberry was voted to the All-Star Game eight straight times from 1984-1991…He also was a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner (1988, 1990)…During his career, he oftentimes battled off the field with drug addiction, seeking rehabilitation several times…In 1998 he was diagnosed with color cancer and staged a courageous comeback in 1999 to play again…He retired with 335 home runs, 1,000 RBI’s and a .259 batting average…He founded “The Darryl Strawberry Foundation,” an organization dedicated to helping children with autism.
