Career Highlights: One of the most successful collegiate coaches of all time, Steve Spurrier completed his third season as Head Coach at the University of South Carolina…His 2007 squad got off to a quick start with wins over SEC rival #11 Georgia, as well as beating then undefeated #8 Kentucky, and climbed to #6 in the National and BCS rankings before stumbling down the stretch…In 2006, Spurrier led the Gamecocks to an 8-5 record and a win over Conference USA champion Houston in the Liberty Bowl….Not expected to have a winning season in his first year with the team in 2005, Spurrier led the Gamecocks to a five-game SEC winning streak including historic wins at Tennessee and against then 12th ranked Florida…He was named SEC Coach of the Year by Associated Press…That season, led the 7-4 Gamecocks to the Independence Bowl, where they lost to Missouri…Prior to South Carolina, Spurrier was head coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins (2002-03)… Before his stint in the NFL, he spent 12 years with the University of Florida Gators where he won 122 games, averaging over 10 wins per season…His Gators beat Florida State to win the national title in 1996 with a 12-1 record…Spurrier’s win-loss record at Florida makes him the winningest coach in NCAA history during his first nine years at one school…He led the Gators to seven SEC championships…Spurrier won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1966 after serving as Florida’s starting quarterback for three seasons…He was a First-Team All-American in 1965 and 1966…Spurrier was a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1967 and played 10 NFL seasons including a stint with Tampa Bay…His first head coaching position was with Tampa Bay of the USFL…Spurrier also spent three years at Duke, where he coached the Blue Devils to a 1989 bowl appearance and conference championship.
